Jonathan Becerra, better known by his artist name Benny Arte, was born in 1970 in Caracas, Venezuela. The son of renowned visual artist Milton Becerra, he grew up in a richly artistic environment, surrounded by iconic figures such as Jesús Soto, Carlos Cruz-Diez, and Pancho Quilici. These early influences shaped his approach and understanding of art from a young age.
In the 1990s, Jonathan delved into computer studies and discovered digital creation techniques, captivated by Vasarely’s modern approach and his concept of “art for all.” Resonating with this forward-thinking vision, he began experimenting with his own digital art. Under the pseudonym Benny Arte, he created a Lego character named Benny, placing him in popular culture contexts such as music, advertising, and media. This approach positioned him within the tradition of Pop Art, while also standing in contrast to elitist artistic culture.
Over time, the world of Benny Arte expanded, incorporating elements from geek culture and video games while staying connected to Jonathan’s roots. Indigenous figures began appearing in his works, signaling a shift toward a more personal and spiritual realm. His series “Multiple Sphere,” featuring the character Benny aligned with the four elements, marked a new chapter in his creative journey. Jonathan Becerra continues to push the boundaries of digital art, revisiting Pop Art, symbolism, and both figurative and abstract art. He also created the virtual gallery Walls Emerging to support international artists and chairs the Milton Becerra Foundation, carrying forward his family’s artistic legacy.
