With “The Kiss”, created between 1908 and 1909, Gustav Klimt produced what is probably the most famous masterpiece of Viennese Jugendstil. The lovers, kneeling on a flowering meadow, appear to float before a golden, almost timeless background. Klimt fused painting, gold leaf and ornamental forms in a unique way, drawing inspiration from Byzantine mosaics. While the angular patterns of the robe characterize the man, the round and floral ornaments of the woman symbolize harmony and gentleness. Painted during Klimt’s Golden Period, the work was acquired for what is now the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna even before its completion. To this day, “The Kiss” is regarded as an emblem of love, intimacy and beauty.
