Hieronymus Bosch ( Hieronymus Van Aken, El Bosco * 1450 † 1516 )

Biography of Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516)

On the precipice of the human condition

Hieronymus Bosch was born around 1450, under the name of Hieronymus van Aken, in 's-Hertogenbosch. No information about his family nor about their formation is known. In 1478, he married the rich Aleyt Goyaert van Mervenne, which assured him a good economic situation.

Quickly, he forged his reputation and many of his works were commissioned by Philip the Handsome, Margaret of Austria who ruled the Netherlands and Philip II of Spain. Bosch's paintings were copied by his contemporaries because of their popularity.

He died in August 1516 in his hometown, 's-Hertogenbosch.
The most famous paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, "Last Judgment" and "Garden of Delights", illustrate the decline of traditions painted in the form of fantastic scenes. However, the exact meaning of these artworks is still unknown.
