Art style Mannerism

Hieronymus Bosch -

Mannerism

Mannerism is an artistic movement that started approximately in 1520 – 1530, and turned away from the classical concepts of the Renaissance. Some characteristic of Mannerism are unrealistic colors, an exaltation of figures and exaggerated spaces. This style is characterized by a penchant for odd compositions and conscious puzzles, which are often interpreted as a medieval fear and anxiety of society turning away from faith.

Some of the most famous artists belonging to Mannerism are Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Hieronymus Bosch, Bartholomäus Spranger, El Greco, Tintoretto and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. By the end of the 16th century, Baroque replaced Mannerism.
