Raoul Dufy was born on June 3, 1877, in Le Havre and showed an early interest in art and music. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he initially turned to Impressionism before being profoundly influenced by the works of Henri Matisse and the Fauvist painters. Dufy began experimenting with bold colors and simplified forms, giving his paintings a distinctive lightness and decorative quality.
From around 1905, Dufy was among the most renowned representatives of Fauvism. His subjects—harbor views, beach scenes, horse races, concerts, and flowers—depict vibrant life with dynamic contours, joyful colors, and light-filled compositions. The works of Cézanne and later Cubism also influenced his creations, yet Dufy developed a unique, cheerful style often described as "painterly music."
In addition to painting, Dufy was also active as a textile designer, illustrator, and set designer. His collaboration with fashion designer Paul Poiret and the silk manufacturer Bianchini-Férier made him well-known in applied arts in the 1920s. He created fabrics, ceramics, and murals and was highly regarded for his versatile creativity. One of his most famous works is the monumental mural "La Fée Électricité," which he created for the 1937 Paris World's Fair.
Raoul Dufy died on March 23, 1953, in Forcalquier. His art, full of optimism and lightness, remained a celebration of life even in challenging times. As one of the most popular French painters of the 20th century, he left behind a body of work that continues to captivate with its lively colors and positive aura.
