Biography of Gustave Caillebotte

A rainy day in Paris

The French painter Gustave Caillebotte was born on August 19th, 1848 in Paris.

Caillebotte started drawing at the age of 12. During the 1870 war with Prussia, he joined the French army for 9 months and then traveled with in father and brother to Italy, Sweden and Norway. In 1872, he started art studies with the painter Léon Bonnat to take the entry test to the French school of Beaux-Arts.

In 1873, at the age of 25 his father died and he inherited of his property in Yerres. There he started painting and financially supported the impressionist art movement for their first art fair.

Caillebotte's style was influenced by Edgar Degas, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Most of his artwork, called the Collection Caillebotte, is in Musée d’Orsay, Paris.

Gustave Caillebotte died on February 21st, 1894 at the age of 45 years old.
